ULTIMATE STRICTLY Advent Calendar 2018
Wednesday 5th December
Back in the 2014 Christmas Special, Louis Smith returned to the ballroom to dance with a new partner, Aliona Vilani. He’d originally competed in the tenth series of the main show with Flavia Cacace, and the pair had been firm favourites with the public throughout the series. After a medal winning performance in the London Olympics, Louis had taken on the challenge of Strictly, and a challenge it proved to be. Some weeks Louis shone and rose to the top of the leaderboard, and others he struggled, and on a couple of occasions he split the judges too. His salsa in week three earned 8 points from all judges except Len, who only gave him a six. Then, a few weeks later, Craig awarded him a six for his waltz while all the other judges thought it was worth a 9! In the final, Flavia made full use of his gymnastics training and technique for their showdance which earned them their only 40 of the main competition, and it impressed the viewers too, as they were victorious at the end of the night and picked up the trophy as champions.
When Louis danced in the quickstep in this Christmas Special, he was partnered with Aliona, who choreographed a routine which seemed to balance plenty of classic quickstep in hold with sections of charleston out of hold, some gymnastics and even a sneaky lift at the end. The judges loved it, and gave them a perfect 40, even more impressive when you consider that Louis had never danced the quickstep in the main show, so it was his first one ever! They also won over the audience too and were crowned Christmas Champions at the end of the evening.
